March 2018 will see the birth of a new competition for choral conductors: Suomalainen kuoronjohtajakilpailu (The Finnish Choral Conductor Competition). The competition is open to all conductors born in or after 1983 that are either Finnish nationals or residents of Finland.

The competition time is March 17-18, 2018 in Tampere at the Tampere Music Academy. The application time for the competition closes on the 15th of October. The application form is available here. A video recording is to be attached to the application. This video of the applicant needs to feature both conducting and rehearsing.

The Competition is organized by the Finnish Choral Directors’ Association (FCDA) in co-operation with the Tampere University of Applied Sciences, School of Music and the Tampere Conservatory. The winner of the competition will be offered a concert with the professional ensemble Tampere Cappella during the Tampere Vocal Music Festival in June 2019 and a 500 euro prize. The conductors chosen to compete will work with the following choirs during the competition: Chamber Choir Näsi, Male Choir Valkia and Spira Ensemble. The competitors may work with the choirs either in Finnish or in English.
